Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is the first mainline anime after Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. It is also the first Gundam anime that features a female lead. The anime made its debut on October 2, 2022, as part of the Fall 2022 anime season.
When Does The Witch from Mercury Take Place in the Gundam Timeline?
While most of the Gundam series are connected to one another, The Witch from Mercury is a stand-alone show. The Witch from Mercury happened years after the previous series, so it comes from a whole new different timeline. This means it has its own background and history. The official Gundam website stated that the mecha anime took place in the year 122 Ad Stella. While it is kind of sad that the anime is not related to the other series, Gundam fans will find it intriguing that the new series is fresh. Having an entirely new series means that anything can happen in the storyline as there are no previous timelines to follow.
How Does The Witch from Mercury Figure Into the Gundam Franchise?
The Vanadis Institute created GUND, an advanced man-machine system designed to improve humanity’s goal to see the stars. It was then used to develop Mobile Suits after Ochs Earth took over the company. Unfortunately, it did some damage to its subjects so the Mobile Suit Development Council Front decided to ban the use of GUND. The satellite research facility of GUND-based technology was destroyed, including its researchers. What the council did not know is that Mobile Suit pilot Elnora Samaya and Ericht Samaya, her daughter, survived. After 12 years, Ericht, now called Suletta Mercury, decided to transfer to an academic institute called the Asticassia School of Technology. She then met Miorine Rembran, a girl who wanted to escape the institute as a way to rebel against her father. Suletta planned to prove herself as a good pilot using Gundam Aerial, a Mobile Suit that was created using GUND technology.
