Warrior Nun is a Netflix original series based on Warrior Nun Areala, a graphic novel created by Ben Dunn. Both the television series and the graphic novel draw heavily from Catholic stories, referencing the Bible in episode titles, creatures, and even relics and artifacts. One creature that strikes fear in the hearts of many is the Tarask.
What are the Tarasks in Warrion Nun?
The Tarask was posed to be a fearsome creature in the Warrior Nun. A Tarask is a higher order demon, much more powerful than the common wraith demon. They can escape their bonds to hell and appear in the mortal realm. Slipping their demonly bonds requires great energy, which is why the Tarasks can only stay in the mortal realm within short periods of time. In Warrior Nun lore, Adriel first appeared on Earth being chased by a Tarask during the first Crusade War. Maybe because of its terrifying looks, the humans rejoiced when Adriel slayed the demon with the Halo and immediately assumed that Adriel was an angel and the Tarask was a force of evil. A Tarask’s body is made of pure Divinum, as we learned when Ava found the remains of one Tarask, embedded within the thick walls of Adriel’s prison deep in the Vatican underground. Sister Beatrice theorizes that the Tarask’s remains were the true source of Divinum on Earth, not Adriel’s armor. Tarasks are tall, big creatures with jet-black skin that looks like thick armor. By the end of Warrior Nun Season 2, Ava and the entire team have done everything they can to stop Adriel, but they just can’t defeat him. She then summons the Tarasks using the Halo’s energy as one last Hail Mary (get it) to protect the Earth from Adriel’s plans. The Tarasks arrive and immediately kill Adriel, tearing him to pieces and ending his life once and for all. The Tarasks turn to Ava and Beatrice, but upon Reya’s orders, leave the pair harmless, teleporting away the same way they came. This implies that Reya controls the Tarasks and that the Tarasks were after Adriel to retrieve the Halo he stole.
What is the Tarasque in the Catholic Stories?
The Tarasque, or Tarrasque, is first written about in records about St. Martha and her life in the Spanish town of Tarascon. In one of the stories, the saint learns that the local residents have been trying for years to deal with a dragon-like creature that scares and harms the people, but have failed because it remains well hidden underwater. It was said that the Tarasque was the offspring of the Leviathan, a water monster, and the Bonachus, an ancient animal. St. Martha proceeds to tame the demon using holy water and a wooden cross, which was then slaughtered by the townsfolk. Tarrasque appears in many fantasy-based games, like Defense of the Ancient (DOTA) and Dungeons & Dragons.
