This show’s upcoming streaming release was announced at Aniplex Online Fest 2022 which happened last Saturday, September 24. There, details about the series’ airing were shared.
Urusei Yatsura is an anime by David Production that’s based on the iconic manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Ranma ½ and Inuyasha. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from September 1978 to February 1987. It first received an anime adaptation back in 1981. This first anime was made by Pierrot and Studio DEEN, and it ran for 195 episodes. Given this, the new David Production series is considered a remake. Like the 80s anime series, the upcoming remake will be broadcast on Fuji TV. But viewers outside Japan will be able to watch the show on the streaming platform HIDIVE. In its story, the series follows Ataru Moroboshi, a lecherous high school student who is chosen as Earth’s defender from an alien invasion. Ataru faced Lum, a beautiful alien in a game of tag with Earth’s freedom on the line. Ataru ended up winning the game, and he screamed out in celebration. But this is misinterpreted by Lum as a marriage proposal. Thus began their “marriage” as Lum stayed on Earth with Ataru.
Following the Aniplex stream, HIDIVE confirmed via Twitter that the Urusei Yatsura remake will be streamed there in the US and select regions. The series will be four cours in length, with the first two airing consecutively in Fall 2022 and Winter 2023. Aside from the Urusei Yatsura remake, there are other titles that won’t be on Crunchyroll and instead will be on HIDIVE. These shows include Bibliophile Princess and Akiba Maid War. In case you’re unfamiliar, HIDIVE is an anime streaming service that was launched in 2017. Operated by Sentai Holdings, the platform streams a range of anime titles, including Made in Abyss, Call of the Night, and other shows. The Urusei Yatsura remake will premiere on October 13, 2022.
