Back in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel finally premiered after multiple delays since its inception in 2003. Not surprisingly, the movie did impressively well at the worldwide box office, becoming Robert Rodriguez’s highest-grossing film in his career. Needless to say, people were expecting a sequel but it also seemed unlikely considering that it was the last movie released by 20th Century Fox before the Disney acquisition.
But is it possible that Disney might be thinking of producing Alita 2? Jon Landau, who produced the first film, recently told Deadline that he has discussed the possibility with director Robert Rodriguez. “There’s a little film called Alita: Battle Angel that we would love to circle back and do a sequel to, and been talking to Robert about that and hopefully that comes to fruition,” Landau said.
This is truly welcome news since there is an entire movement devoted to the sequel. The online movement known as #AlitaArmy continues to push for Alita: Battle Angel 2 and hopefully, Disney will eventually listen. Alita: Battle Angel concluded with several teases at what could happen in the future. For instance, the late reveal of Nova (played by Edward Norton) strongly suggested he will play a larger role in the second movie. In addition to that, Rodriguez has repeatedly expressed his intention to work on a sequel. With that in mind, we could get a more solid update in the next few months. Alita: Battle Angel is based on the Gunnm manga by Yukito Kishiro and stars Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.
